We’ve spoken to 2,000 British women to understand the facts about hair loss in the UK. Our research has confirmed that hair loss is not only an emotional issue, but also one that is poorly understood.
So how do we feel about hair loss in the UK?
- 69% of women in the UK feel judged for their thinning hair.
- 22% of Brits were unaware that hair loss affects both men and women.
- 60% of women report anxiety as a result of hair loss.
Although more than two in five (45%) women experience hair loss at some point in their lives, it is still perceived as a ‘male’ issue. We’re all familiar with male hair loss, but how it impacts women is rarely discussed. Our research has revealed that one in five Brits (22%) didn’t know that hair loss can affect both sexes.
Something hairstylists and people experiencing hair loss know all too well is the sensitivity of the issue. Hair loss can cause feelings of sadness (61%), embarrassment (61%) and anxiety (60%). With stress being a key trigger for hair loss – the emotive nature of this issue creates a vicious cycle, one that millions of women are struggling with.
In addition to the emotions caused by experiencing hair loss itself, the lack of awareness around the issue has caused many women to feel ashamed (28%). Nearly half (44%) said they were devastated when they first realised they were losing hair, and worryingly, 7% even said they felt suicidal.
Despite how common hair loss is, seven in ten (69%) women feel that they are judged because of their thinning hair – highlighting that an unnecessary social stigma still exists. To mark Alopecia Awareness Month this September, we’re encouraging Brits to brush off the stigma surrounding hair loss by closing the knowledge gap.
