Here is how hair works.

  • Active Phase (Anagen)

    The dermal papillae (small extensions from the dermis to the epidermis) send nutrients and growth signals to the hair follicles.

  • Regression Phase (Catagen)

    The dermal papillae begin separating from the hair follicle, signaling that the growth phase is over.

  • Resting Phase (Telogen)

    The hair follicle goes into hibernation. While the old hair is resting, a new hair begins its growth phase.

  • Shedding Phase (Exogen)

    The old hair sheds, falling out of the hair follicle, until a new one takes its place.

Synthetic Prostaglandins, Steroids

Prostaglandins are active lipid compounds with diverse hormone-like effects involved in muscle contraction, vasodilation and inflammation. Prostaglandin analogues bind onto prostaglandin receptors to perform a bioactivity, namely, reducing ocular pressure (treating glaucoma).

Finasteride

Originally developed to treat prostate enlargement and cancer, Finasteride is typically used for male hair loss. Its use is still controversial for female hair loss due to the possibility of birth defects. Other side effects may include swelling, dizziness, headache, gastrointestinal discomfort, excessive facial and/ or body hair growth and sexual dysfunction. Not our vibe at all.

Bimatoprost

Synthetic prostaglandin analogue originally used to treat glaucoma is now also used as a prescription drug to grow eyelashes. Side effects may include blurred vision, eye and eyelid redness, eye burning or other discomfort, and permanent darkening of the iris.

Isopropyl Cloprostenate

Originally developed as a blood pressure medicine, now a widely used OTC drug to treat hair loss. Side effects may include initial hair shedding, burning, facial hair growth, inflammation, soreness, reddened skin.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil, found in over-the-counter hair growth products, was first developed for ulcers and later marketed for high blood pressure. Some users report scalp and skin irritation, unwanted hair growth, headaches, irregular heart rate, low blood pressure and even temporary hair loss.

Keratin

The keratin found in hair products doesn’t bond with the hair. The molecules don’t adhere to hair follicles, so it just rinses out!
